Hello all
The spring semester has finally come to an end. It was a great semester at UIW because of all the events that were put on. My fraternity had a social at the beginning of the semester that was golf and tennis themed at one of the VFW Posts. It was a great night to relax and socialize with brothers and guests. Lambda Chi ALpha also had their formal this past month at the Omni Hotel on the 20th floor that had one of the best views of San Antonio. Many of our alumni and distinguish guests came and it was a blast. We even had a special performance by Lady Gaga! The bad part about the night was that over 20 of our brothers, guests and campus adviser got sick with strep throat! We still have no clue on how that happened.
We had many cool events on campus such as a date auction that benefited Project Africa which is an organization on campus that has raised money to build a school in Africa. The date auction was held and it was a great event that brought many students out. There was a five minute speed dating table and free food. There was also a Meet the Greeks Luau where all the sororities and fraternities on campus worked together to showcase what each greek organization had to offer. There was free BBQ and craw fish that student enjoyed. As many people know who live in San Antonio, Alamo Heights night was held on our campus for the first time. This is a Fiesta event and usually draws a large crowd. They had booths set up with food such as tacos, chicken on a stick, turkey legs, and other snacks. Even though it rained a bit, the crowd enjoyed the live music and karaoke that was provided.
The Cardinal Overnighter was also a success this year. We had over 150 high school seniors from all over the country but mostly from Texas that got the chance to stay on campus for one night and experience the dorm life. They were paired with a current UIW student and attended the classes of that student the next day to observe the way professors teach. The Student Ambassadors are in charge of this event and we went bowling and out to eat with the students. It was a lot of fun and cool meeting so many interested high school seniors. We have these events twice a semester so be sure to look for those dates when they are posted on the website!
With the closing of the school year, many friends and brothers of mine were about to graduate and leave UIW. Some were going back home to different cities and states while others are ready to start jobs or find them. We had graduation last week which is always a fun and exciting event. There is a procession through campus with bagpipes that lead the graduates one last time trough campus. The Student Ambassadors which I am apart of walked with them holding about 20 flags of countries represented from the graduates. It was a really neat event and I wish my brothers and friends the best of luck.
The summer has begun and I am excited to work and just spend time with friends. I am a Summer Orientation Leader again this year which means I get to meet and guide the new students for the fall through our school. It is one of the best jobs to make new friends and inform students of how they made the right choice to come to UIW. Have a great weekend!
