After four hours of studying for my Spanish test last night, I had to accept that I am in over my head with my Spanish class. I have been behind in the class since the semester started. I went to Chile last semester, but I am not up to a level of advanced Spanish yet, not at all. At first I thought I just needed time to adjust, but it is not worth stressing this semester over. I am going to keep up with my Spanish tutors and practice writing and building vocabulary. However, my advanced Spanish class is not about building vocabulary and working on sentence structure. I am expected to be at a level that I am currently not at. I pay attention and work hard, but I have a lot to learn. I have decided to drop the class and spend the semester focusing on growing in my Spanish. I can still write papers for my teacher and practice dialogue, but I won’t have to worry about falling behind in my class. I can move at my pace and then this summer I plan to do another intensive Spanish program. The problem I ran into is that I had zero background in Spanish before the semester. Yes, I learned a ton, but I was learning from scratch. I had to waste weeks understanding different tenses and how to conjugate, so I am not into complex sentence structure. Also, I feel like I am coming across hundreds of new words all the time and I need to sit down and actually focus on memorizing them. I was really nervous about Spanish at first, but I know that with the help of the teachers I will be able to conquer this language.
